YOUNGSTOWN ANTHONY J. MAMONIS, SR. Our cowboy Anthony J. Mamonis Sr. has departed from this life on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center in Columbiana. He was born October 5, 1923 a son of James and Mary (Antoun) Mamounis. He graduated from East High School in 1942, and proudly served his country in WWII in the Air Force as a Sergeant . He was a crew chief on a B-17 from 1943 to 1946. He was recalled in the Korean War and served from 1950-1951 in the Boat Squadron. Anthony worked at Republic Steel Truscon Division for 25 years as a welder . In 1980 he became a very caring loveable school bus driver for the Youngstown Board of Education until 1989. He also was in Real Estate with Julian Reality and worked part time with Garland Welding, where he welded the staircase at the Shrine at Our Lady of Mt. Lebanon as a gift to his mother. He was a life long member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and a board member. He also was a former member of Eastern Orthodox bowling and golf league, and St. Nicholas Seniors on the Wedgewood Bowling League. He loved boating and fishing at Pymatuning and Mosquito Lake, especially when he was taking his grandchildren and nephews. A super hunter and a great marksman, he could out walk anyone for hours. Anthony was a "Jack" of all trades and was called upon by everyone to repair everything and anything. He loved his country western music and also his Greek music, old or new that he danced to. His wife the former Helen (Cominos) Mamonis, whom he married on September 15, 1946, passed away on September 10, 2010. Anthony will be sadly missed and remembered by many, especially his sons, Anthony (Debbie) Mamonis of Poland, Peter (Marlene) Mamonis of Warren and James (Amy) Mamonis of Berlin Center, daughters Marie (John) Macchio of Canfield, and Teddy (Rick) Noday of Austintown. He also leaved 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons. Besides his parents and wife, Anthony was preceded in death by his brothers Gus and Angelo Mamonis, his sisters Katherine Fentules, Becky Nicolaidis and Theodora Econamakis, his nephew Dean Mamonis and a niece Leyela Malis. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all of Anthony's angels at St. Mary's Alzheimer's, who gave him much love, kindness and compassion during his four year stay. Calling hours for Mr. Mamonis will be on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:00, and also on Tuesday from 10:00-10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, where the funeral mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Belmont Park Cemetery.
