Charles J. Ivan Sr., 95, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017. Mr. Ivan was born September 7, 1922 in Girard, Ohio and moved to Youngstown at an early age.  He attended various schools in the area and graduated from Jackson Milton in 1940. After graduating, he worked briefly for Youngstown Welding while attending night school at Youngstown College, majoring in drafting.  He joined the Navy in September of 1942. During WWII, he served in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, participating in campaigns in Sicily, Anzio, and southern France.  Charles was medically discharged from the Navy in 1945.
He joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters as an apprentice in 1946.  During his forty year tenure with the Brotherhood, he spent 22 years at the trade and 18 years working in the office.  Charles served as a business agent and instructor coordinator of apprentice and journeymen retraining.  He was also involved in contract negotiations.
Charles was a 71 year member of Carpenters Local 171, a 77 year member of Croatian Fraternal Union of St. George Lodge 66, a member of American Legion Post 301, and a lifetime member of DAV. He enjoyed working around his house, boating, camping, fishing, and golfing.
He joins his wife, Marie, who passed away in 2013.  Their 66 years of marriage would be very difficult to duplicate.  He leaves his son, Charles (Claudia Jo) Ivan Jr. of Canfield; son, Joseph (Abby) Ivan Sr. of  Boardman; Granddaughter, Amy (Chad) Moreschi of Columbiana; Sister-in-Law Anne Mavar of Poland; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.  Besides his wife, Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Dianne Hartwick, his brother, George and his parents.
A private family memorial service was held for Mr. Ivan. Arrangements were handled by Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home in Youngstown, Ohio.
