Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 18 at St. John Greek Orthodox Church, Boardman, for Irene Nichols, 84, who died Thursday, October 13 at Hospice House. Irene was born November 4, 1931, in Campbell, Ohio, a daughter of John and Sevasti (Boyiazis) Arfaras. She was a 1949 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School where she was a proud member of the National Honor Society, the Red & Black and the Scholarship Club. She worked as a teller for Dollar Bank in Campbell and as a clerk at the main branch of the Mahoning County Public Library, retiring in 1996. Irene was proud of her Greek heritage and was a member of both St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman and Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Campbell. She was an active member of the St. John Seniors Group, the Symian Society, the Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Penelope. She was also an avid reader and loved spending time with her family.
Irene is survived by her husband, James Nichols of Boardman, whom she married October 11, 1964; daughter Margo (Joseph) Kondela of Boardman; sisters Faye Zambetis of Canfield and Eleptheria (Paul) Butchko of Poland; sister-in-law Faye Arfaras of Poland; step-daughter Brenda Henderson of Struthers; step-granddaughter Michelle Ondrey of Youngstown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her brother William Arfaras, brother in law Cleo Zambetis, nephew Theodore Conrad and step-son James Nichols.
Family and friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Chirichella, the staff at St. Elizabeth SICU unit, and the staff of Hospice House for their unwavering care and compassion during her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made to either Hospice House in North Lima or the St. John Church Restoration Fund.
