John Stroney Jr. Obituary

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 2:00 pm at St. Christine Church  for John L Stroney, 91, who passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2019. John was born in Youngstown on October 23, 1927, a son of John L. and Catherine Vasco Stroney. He resided in the Nebo area of Struthers, attended Holy Trinity Catholic School, Struthers High School and Youngstown College. He was a member of St. Christine Church, serving as an usher at the 10:30 Mass, volunteering at school projects, the church festival and youth programs. He was a 50 year member of St. Christine Boy Scouts, Troop 22, where he served as cub master, committee chairman, coordinator of Catholic Committee on Scouting, and instructor for the Religion awards in scouting. He was a  member of the Knights of Columbus,  4th degree, a member of Whispering Pines district, committee on advancement and camping, a council member at Camp Stambaugh, properties committee, served as recording secretary and quarter master, served 50 years at the Tri-County CU, as a board member and credit committee.  He also served one year as President of Telephone Pioneers and was on the activities and tour committees.  John served during WWII with the Navy Seabees in the Pacific, he is a lifetime member of the  Seabees Island X8 Youngstown as recording secretary. He was employed at Ohio Bell Telephone Co., retiring as Assistant Manager. In his lifetime, he received the Stambaugh Archiver, St. George and Silver Beaver Awards. He enjoyed camping, skiing, and hiking. His hobby was his workshop, word working and clocks.  John married Dorothy Skidmore on April 6, 1953. John and Dorothy traveled thru out  the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, and Mardco AFC. The family enjoyed yearly vacations at the Outer Banks, N.C.  Dorothy passed away August 12, 2018. They raised three wonderful sons, Leonard and  Marilou LaCivita Stroney of Boardman, Matthew and Ann Marie Drapcho Stroney of Ellsworth, and Bruce and Deanna O'Rourke Stroney of Boardman;  two grandchildren Stephen and Lisa Merrell Stroney of Canfield, and Sarah Stroney and Steven Novotny of Philadelphia; two great grandchildren, Luke Stroney and Alice Stroney of Canfield; numerous cousins, Joe Ziemianski, Thomas Ziemianski, Carmen Pitzulo, Fred Fisher, Cecilia Varsho, Collette Sevenson, and Albert Stroney.  Beside his wife, Dorothy, his parents, aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins preceded him in death. Friends will be received on Wednesday, April 3 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and again Thursday, April 4 from 1:00 to 1:30 pm at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home in Youngstown.
