John J. Yager, 93, left this Earth to be with his beloved Edith, Saturday, April 27, 2019, after a short illness.
He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Yager Groezinger; son-in-law Jeff; and grandson Erich.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Edith.
He was the last surviving of five brothers and sisters and leaves many nieces and nephews.
He was a member of The Greatest Generation, a decorated World War II veteran, receiving the Purple Heart while stationed in Germany. A devoted fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns, he listened to every game from his swing in the back yard of his home in Youngstown or his garage in Columbus. He worked for years first at Tip Top Bakery and later for Schwebel’s before retiring.
Originally born in Newton Falls, he lived most of his life in Youngstown before moving to Columbus in 2005 to be closer to his daughter and family. His life was simple and nothing was more important to him than his faith and family. He was the best father, papa and hide and go seeker and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at St. Christine Catholic Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave. in Youngstown, with Father John Keehner, Celebrant. Interment with military honors to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
