Joseph Yurcho Obituary


A Requiem Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 11:00 am  at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Vienna, with Fr. Joseph Portzer, F.S.S.P. officiating,  for Joseph  Yurcho, 96, who passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019. Joseph was born  in Struthers, on November 1, 1922 a son of Frank Yurcho and Mary Martinko Yurcho Advey. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on a destroyer and the battleship U.S.S. Arkansas. He was a graduate of Struthers High School, had a BS Degree from Youngstown College, a MS Degree from Wesminister College and did Post Grad work at Cleveland Western Reserve. He was a teacher for 7 years and principal for 32 years at H.C. Mines in Howland, Hermitage Middle School and Mons. Monti School in Farrell, PA. He was a member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Vienna and was the past president of the Teachers Organization of Ohio, past president of the Principals Organization of Ohio, past president of Tri County Principal Association of Ohio, Program Director of Adult Activities at the Y.W.C.A., and  the Bowling Association President, Warren, Ohio. He excelled in bowling, tennis, racquetball and handball. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lillian Pruss Yurcho, whom he married February 8, 1964;  three daughters, Lynette (Anthony) Urankar of Richfield,  Bonnie (John) Zitricki of Hinckley, and Janine (Tim) Gallagher of Richfield; two brothers, Paul (Arlene) Avdey of Girard and Walter (Judy) Avdey of Lowellville; sixteen grandchildren, Stephanie, Danica, Michael, Julia, Rok, Anthony and Gemma Urankar, Joe and Halle Zitricki, Zachary, Cassandra, Alec, Katrina, Liam, Jake and Jelena Gallagher; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Irene Yurcho and Olga Libert; one brother, Jake Yurcho; and a cousin, Fr. Michal Slivka. Friends will be received on Monday, May 13, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home in Youngstown.  Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, Ohio. The family wishes to thank Mahoning Valley Hospice for their care and assistance.
