1937-2026
Alvernia M. Barnes passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, April 20, 2026 at Calcutta Senior Care.
She was born on November 8, 1937 to Michael and Jeanne (Steffee) Salvatore in New Springfield, Ohio.
Alvernia worked at Murphy Mart and Walmart as a cashier and stock person. She loved the country and lived on a farm for most of her life. She loved animals and will be especially missed by her cats. Alvernia was a very sweet and loving person, constantly willing to help anyone in need. She was a former active member of the Beaver Local Sports Boosters and very involved in supporting her sons in all of their sports activities. She did this with a lot of love and affection.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories her two sons, John (Beverly) Barnes of Standish, Maine and Shawn Barnes of Calcutta, Ohio. Alvernia also leaves her 3 grandchildren, Corey, Tyler and Journey Barnes along with 3 great-grandchildren, Dallas, Eevee and Cash. She also leaves her 2 sisters, Donna Zielinski of New Middletown, Ohio and Jeanne Basista of Florida. She was proceeded in death by her parents and a sister Mary Lou Kosinski.
She was a loving, sweet kind person right up until the end. Her boys and family were her world and she loved them very much. They were blessed to call her Mom and share in her final moments.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 2:00pm -4:00pm at Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, 3100 Canfield Road, Youngstown, Ohio 44511. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, at 11:00 am at St. Mary Magdalene Parish, St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44511.
