Barbara Vouvalis, 93, of Youngstown, OH passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family, Friday, May 8 2026. Barbara was born April 23, 1933 in Youngstown, the daughter of Nicholas and Aristea (Arseniou) Mays. She was a graduate of Rayen High School and a lifetime resident of Youngstown.
Barbara worked at General Electric for 10 years before marrying the love of her life, John Vouvalis, a union they shared for almost 63 years.
Barbara was a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, where she sang in the choir from the age of 16 and was a member of the Philoptochos Society. She was honored with the Metropolis of Pittsburgh St. Photios Award for her dedicated service to St. Nicholas. She especially loved working with her fellow church friends every year to prepare for the annual church Summerfest. Barbara was a voracious reader and loyal fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Indians. She loved Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Westerns and lottery scratch-offs. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and Grand Pets. She will be always be remembered for her infectious smile, happy spirit, kindness and love for all.
Barbara leaves behind her children, Nicholas (Grace) Vouvalis of Spring Hill, FL, daughters, Anna and Aristea of Youngstown and grandchildren, Anastasia (Dario) Delcik, Eleni Bates, Christopher (Alexandra) Vouvalis, and four great-grandchildren, Elijah and Evander Bates and Nektaria and Isidora Vouvalis.
Barbara also leaves behind brothers, Chris Mays, Pete (Kathy) Mays, Harry Mays and sister, Doris Giancola.
Her member will also be cherished by many nieces, nephews and close family friends, Doug (Bridget) Grant and Rich Pallotta.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John and son, Charles as well as brothers, Mike, William, George and Spiro Mays, sisters, Bessie Thomas, Julia Koulaxizes, Stella Michelakis, Virginia Mays and Helen Lubic.
Family would like to express gratitude to Kerri Zokle of Southern Care Hospice and loving family friend, Denise DeGise, who went above and beyond to care for Barbara.
Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM, Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 220 N. Walnut St., Youngstown, followed by a funeral service at 11 AM, also at the church.
Burial will be at Belmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
