Gil, affectionately known as " Buddy" by friends and family, was born on May 20, 1941, the son of Gilbert M. Berquist and Lucille VanCise Berquist.
He lived in Youngstown his entire life. Raised on the South Side, Gil was a graduate of the inaugural class of Cardinal Mooney High School in 1959, where he lettered in football and basketball. Gil began his career at Republic Steel, then spent 27 years as a data and senior systems analyst manager at Packard Electric in Warren, Ohio, before retiring.
Gil was a track and field official for the OHSAA for 20 years. He enjoyed golf, racing, and proudly supported his children and grandchildren in all of their various activities. He was an avid music lover, throughout his life, and gave music to people whom he thought were special. He was a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He also loved NASCAR and would watch every race with anticipation.
Gil is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Janice; three children, Jill M. Berquist-Bogen, Gilbert M. Berquist III and Joseph A. (Ann) Berquist; and six grandchildren, Benjamin, Daniel and Matthew Bogen, and Isabel, Eleanor and Molly Berquist.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Joseph and Frances Manolio; and son-in-law, Gregg L. Bogen.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, at St. Christine Church. Friends and family are welcome to express condolences an hour before the Mass, starting at 10 a.m., in the vestibule of the church.
