Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 5th at 11:00am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church for Gus Thomas, 87, who passed away on Monday, February 1st.
he was born July 6, 1928 in Nea Iraklitsa, Greece, son of Peter Thomas and Lygiria Vassil.
Gus came here from Greece in 1929 and resided in Lisbon before moving to Youngstown in 1955. He was a 1948 graduate of Lisbon David Anderson High School where he played defense before becoming the star quarterback.
He went on to serve in the Armed Forces and was Private 1st class from 1950 to 1952. While in the Army, he was stationed in Germany.
He worked at Aerolite Extrusions for 40 years as a press operator from 1953 until his retirement in 1993.
he was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Curbstone Coaches, Eastern Orthodox Men's Society and was an avid Cleveland Browns Fan. He was also part of the Lisbon Blue Devil's Alumni and was a loyal supporter of the Blue Devil's football team by attending their games for over 60 years.
Surviving are a son; Peter Thomas of Youngstown, a daughter; Ruth Lynn (Todd) Stillerman of Canfield, a sister; Zafe (Tom) Hyink of St. Petersburg, Florida. a brother in law; Senator Harry Meshel, a grandson; Zachary who was the light of his life and who was the best PaPoù ever. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
He is reunited with his wife, Despina "Dee" Meshel, whom he married February 27, 1955, who he loved so much and missed each and every day. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother; William Thomas and a grandson; Cole Stillerman.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7pm on Thursday, February 4th at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, Inc., Youngstown, and 10:30 to 11:00am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Friday, February 5th.
