Cyril Method Deley passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on August 4, 2015 . “Cy” was born to Andrew and Veronica (Stana) Deley on December 23, 1922 in Youngstown, Ohio and grew up on Marmion Avenue. He was very proud of his family and his Slovak heritage was always relating stories from his childhood.
Cy began working full time at Republic Steel at the early age of 16 while still attending high school. He was the first child in his family to graduate high school graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1942. Several months after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 15, 1942 and became a Machinists Mate 2nd class on the LSS Pontus. He earned the Purple Heart medal when he was wounded by enemy action in the Southwest Pacific during World War II; the American Campaign medal; Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal; WWII Victory medal; Philippine Liberation ribbon; and 6 battle stars. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy on August 17, 1945, he returned to his hometown of Youngstown and worked at Merberger & Lambert Florist. He met and eventually married the love of his life, the former Margaret Chismar, on April 24, 1948. Margaret passed away September 21, 2009.
Cy joined the Youngstown Fire Department on January 1, 1952, beginning as an ambulance driver the first 6 years then becoming an engineer. He became a lieutenant on February 7, 1963 and retired on a disability on March 6, 1981 after 29 years of dedicated service from a career he was so proud of.
He was a member of St. Christine Church as well as The Military Order of the Purple Heart; Local 312 Firefighters; Disabled American Veterans; Jednota; Police & Firemen’s Retirees of Ohio; and P.T. Boater Inc.
Cy was extremely loving, proud and supportive of his large family who all remained close to home and who provided constant care for him in the last months of his life. He leaves his sons Cyril Deley Jr. (Linda Pachis) of New Castle, Pennsylvania; and Edward Deley, who he shared his home with, taking care of each other; his daughters, Veronica Deley of Salem; Andrea (Larry) Saluga of Canfield; Lorraine (Dave) Bowman of North Jackson; and Laura (Tom) Brown of Youngstown; his grandchildren who he cherished, grandson Joseph Zordich, his buddy, of Youngstown (Lucy McKee) who moved in with him and lovingly cared for him the last months of his life; his grandaughters Jeanna and Holly Bowman of North Jackson; and lastly his faithful cat Blackie.
Besides his wife Margaret, he is preceded by his brothers Andrew, Joseph, Peter, and Edward Deley, and sisters Helen and Matilda Deley, and Elizabeth Thomas.
Cy was an amazing person to all who knew and loved him and had such great warmth and humor even to the end. He always had a story to tell and wisdom to pass on. He lived a full, rich 92 years. He will be sadly missed but his memory will stay forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is re-united with his wife who he affectionately called “Babe”, who he loved so much and missed each and every day. Cy is finally “home”.
There will be no calling hours. Private Arrangements will be handled by Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home. The family would like to thank everyone who helped Cy along the way of life and for all who offered their support and prayers for him and his family.
In lieu of contributions, the family is asking just for continued prayers and support.
