AUSTINTOWN WILLIAM DEMETRIOS POULAKOS

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 9, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Greek Orthodox Church on Glenwood Ave in Boardman, with Father Thomas Constantine officiating, for William Demetrios Poulakos, 85, who passed away peacefully, Wednesday evening, January 4, 2012.

On February 2, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio, Demetrios and Eleftheria (Zaloumis) Poulakos were blessed with the birth of their last child, William Demetrios Poulakos. William, "Bill" as most people knew him, was full of life and a person you loved being around.

Bill graduated in 1944 from South High School, where he played football. He proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas in the Philippines and in occupied Japan. Following his discharge, he attended Kent State University, and later worked for the Poulakos Bakery, until his retirement in 1982.

On September 3, 1950 he was married to Harriet Anagnostou, and they shared 49 years together until her death in 2000.

Bill was a member of the church. He was an avid golfer, belonging to various golf leagues, Bears Club, Sebring Country Club, "Corner Boys", and Chaney Library Investors' Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and watching all sporting events. Bill was a Teamster's member.

William is survived by his only daughter, Kathy (Eric) Murdock, grandsons, Nicholas and Christopher of Canfield and granddaughters, Jocelynn (Jeff) Maund, of Milton, Ontario, and Erica Murdock of Columbus, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Louis, Leo, Peter and four sisters, Ionna Panagiotoulos, Irene Pappas, Georgianna Sackos and Florence Kikis.

Friends may call on Sunday, January 8, 2012 from 4-6 p.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home on Canfield Rd., and on Monday morning, one half hour prior to the funeral service at St. John Greek Orthodox Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley, or St. John Greek Orthodox Church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Briarfield Manor Assisted Living in Austintown and Hospice of the Valley for their wonderful care and compassion.

Friends may call on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, where a Trisagion Service will be at 5:00, and also on Monday morning, one half hour prior to the funeral mass at St. John Greek Orthodox Church.
