David J Porter Sr.

David J. Porter, Sr., 84, of Canfield, Ohio, passed away on January 6, 2017 at 4:10 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boardman, Ohio. He was born July 23, 1932, in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late Frank F. Porter Sr. and Josephine Olsolinski. He attended Wilson High School prior to graduating from Ursuline High School. Upon graduating, he proudly served in the military and was honorably discharged by the US Army. After serving in the army, he enrolled in the Union Local 171 Carpenters Apprenticeship Program.
David was married to Eileen (Coustillac) Porter on June 4, 1955; they were married 61 years.
David was considered one of the greatest minds in construction. In 1983, he established D.J. Porter Company, Inc. with the help of his sons, David J. Porter, Jr. and Thomas Porter, Sr. The company constructed many commercial buildings in the tri-state area, including YSU’s Kilcawley Center, Howland Township Government Building, Trumbull County Engineer Building, as well as numerous education and government projects.
David enjoyed summers at his pool, which he built for his family. The family nicknamed the pool “Porter’s Swim Club”. He shared his love for Polish polkas with his dear friends and family members. He was an avid sports fan for local high schools, Ohio State, and Notre Dame sports. David also enjoyed taking drives in his cherished blue 2008 Thunderbird.
David is survived by his wife, Eileen M. Porter, children Patricia (Bert) Nock of Lowellville, David J. Porter, Jr., Kathleen (Kelly) Snow, and Thomas (Tammy) Porter, Sr. all of Canfield; four grandsons, Thomas Nock, David Porter, III, Thomas Porter, Jr., Alex Snow; five granddaughters, Shannon (Thomas) Carchedi, Michelle Porter, Courtney Porter, Halley Snow, Christina Porter; and one great-grandson, Rocco Carchedi.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Margaret “Peggy” Laskowski, Martha Wanat, and Frank “Sonny” Porter.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, 3100 Canfield Rd. in Youngstown. Funeral Services will start at 9:30am on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 at the Funeral Home and continue to St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown, Ohio at 10 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be considered to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
